The origin of the word orange can be traced back to a Sanskrit tale. One day, around the 7th or 8th century BC, an elephant was passing through the forest when he came across a tree he had never seen before. This tree was full of beautiful, tempting oranges, which the elephant could not resist and eventually ate so many that he died.

Many years later, a man arrived at the same place and noticed the remains of the elephant and an orange tree that had grown out of the elephant’s former stomach.

The man then exclaimed: “This fruit is naga ranga”, meaning “elephant’s poison”.
